Course overview
This course builds on students’ understanding of design process, embedded in the design studio and its essential role in practice. Teaching and learning in the course emphasise reliance on process through investigative, analytical, iterative and evaluative methods to inform effective development of visual and typographic designs in response to briefs of increased complexity. It introduces students to the challenges of designing effective visual communication systems and platforms suitable for use in two - and three-dimensional contexts, across various media. Students are provided opportunities to develop awareness of temporal dimensions and narrative across time in the context of visual design artefacts and systems. An introduction to the concept of stakeholder engagement is offered, aiming to develop empathic and human-centred design approaches.

Course learning outcomes
- Research, ideate, and develop innovative design propositions to complex communication problems and scenarios using ethical practices.
- Design visual communication systems and structures in response to specific briefs informed by appropriate visual and conceptual development.
- Design solutions that demonstrate an understanding of narrative in visual design across media formats.
- Identify and discuss appropriate stakeholders and audiences relevant to specific design contexts.
- Apply skills and knowledge of visual design, typography and visual narrative to communicate effectively in multimodal, two- and three-dimensional contexts.
