MATERIAL (MyUni)
How is the program structured? There are eight discrete modules, each covering a key topic in research leadership, together with a Settling In induction activity. The induction is done on-line, while the other modules are delivered through a combination of online study and a face-to-face workshop. Participants need to work through the online material in advance of the workshop.

What is the time commitment? Each face-to-face workshop runs for about four to five hours. Depending on your particular background, you may need to allocate up to a further 10 to 11 hours of online/independent study to cover all the requirements for each module. (Some people may only need half this time.) Bear in mind that a reasonable portion of this time will be spent working through the online material prior to the workshop.

Do I need to do it all at once, and in order? No. The program has been designed with the work schedules of busy career researchers in mind. All modules will be offered every semester, so work through the whole program at a pace that suits your other commitments. And take the modules in any order convenient to you. Though make sure you work through the induction module before you do anything else - this is designed to set the scene for you, and to provide you with essential background information.

What does it cost? Nothing. In most sessions we will even provide refreshments!

Who should participate? The program is aimed at current and aspiring research leaders. If you are currently leading and managing a research project or a research group or are involved in managing and promoting a line of research - or if you are on track to do so - then this program is for you.

What are the benefits? These modules should enable you to improve your ability to gain research grants and your ability to manage projects and personnel successfully. Major granting bodies strongly support participation in this initiative because they believe that researchers who have participated in it will be more likely to make the best use of their grant funding. Heads of School/Discipline should find the program particularly beneficial in respect of providing enhanced research management and leadership skills.
In addition, staff successfully completing the full program within a two year period will be recognised with a Go8 certificate. It is also anticipated that within the next few years the program will be accredited as a post-graduate coursework award; in that event, staff who undertake the program prior to its formal accreditation will be able to gain academic standing for the award.

What topics do the modules cover? The modules cover the following topics: - Settling In (Induction Module) - Research Strategy and Planning (Module 1) - Commencement and Collaboration - putting ideas into practice (Module 2) - Governance and compliance - protecting yourself, your research and your university (Module 3) - Intellectual property, knowledge transfer and commercialisation (Module 4) - Financial, resource and risk management (Module 5) - Grant and Contract Administration (Module 6) - Managing People in a Research Context (Module 7) - Project Closeout (Module 8) View the Program Brochure for more information
