The Joint Research Centre of Grains for Health Centre conducts both basic and applied research across a broad range of areas that link grain biology, nutrition and economics to improve human health. What are the requirements for a PhD at the Grains for Health Centre?

We seek highly motivated students with a first class honours degree (or equivalent degree with a research component) or a high score (>80%) in a Masters (research) degree in one of the following fields:

  • Bioinformatics/Computational Biology
  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Plant Biology/Biotechnology

This form is an application for both admission into the Centre program and for a possible Centre Scholarship.

If you are accepted into the Centre, please be aware you must also apply for (and gain) admission into The University of Adelaide. If your application is accepted by the Centre, Grains for Health will support your application to the University.

*New Zealand permanent residents are classified as international students and so need to use the application form for international PhD students (see below).

The Joint Research Centre of Grains for Health Centre is a multicultural research facility attracting researchers from all over the world. We welcome applications from international students and you can use the link below to complete an application form.

All postgraduate research studies at the Centre are undertaken as students enrolled at the University of Adelaide. If you are accepted into the Centre, please be aware you must also apply for (and gain) admission into the University of Adelaide.

Please also be aware that Centre Scholarships for international students do not cover university tuition fees. International students will therefore be asked to apply for a University scholarship to cover this cost. Our staff will support you in this endeavour.

If English is not your native language, you are required by the University of Adelaide to submit an internationally recognised English Language Proficiency Certificate, such as IELTS or TOEFL. This is the case even if English was the language used in one of your degrees.

    Step 1: apply online to the Joint Research Centre of Grains for Health

    Step 2: assessment by the Joint Research Centre of Grains for Health

    The next step is approval from the PhD committee. The committee will only assess complete applications. We will select only the best candidates and support their application through the remainder of the University of Adelaide admission process.

    Step 3: area of research and potential supervisor assigned

    The Centre has a number world class research programs and while we will make every effort to accommodate your choice, we unfortunately cannot guarantee a placement in that area.

    Step 4: contact assigned centre supervisor to discuss projects

    As supervisors we welcome input from potential students into PhD projects. Once you and your supervisor both decide on a project, you must apply to the University of Adelaide.

    Step 5: apply to the University of Adelaide

    Step 6: await notification from the University of Adelaide of your acceptance into a PhD Program (Admission)

    If you don't already have a scholarship, you will need to receive a University scholarship before you can accept the university's offer of admission.

    Step 7: await notification from the University of Adelaide of your acceptance into a Scholarship Program

    Outcomes are emailed to the address submitted in your application.

    Step 8: accept the University of Adelaide offer

    Once you have received both an offer of admission and a scholarship from the University of Adelaide, accept your offer of admission.
