Our marine home: What is the state of our ocean home, and how can we support it?

Three snoklers looking at a giant cuttlefish

“Our Marine Home” holds space for South Australian’s marine environment. More than the joys of beautiful beaches, South Australia’s oceans are home to rich biodiversity and play an active role in climate regulation. Human activities and climate change are causing detrimental impacts to our oceans. But there are opportunities to help.

Panellists intentionally represent diverse perspectives and theories of change. The discussion will touch on the condition of our marine home, threats to it and what we as people and as a state can do.

On attending this event, we ask you to first ponder the question: How can South Australia best protect its Marine Home? Please come with your answer prepared.

Panelists are:

  • Tim Jarvis: a British-Australian environmental explorer, adventurer, climber, author and documentary filmmaker.
  • Catherine Larkin: a marine ecologist and network blue program lead at the Australian Ocean Laboratory (AusOcean).
  • Erin Laura Pichler: a PhD candidate at the University of Adelaide with research focused on how human impacts shape coastal systems; from ocean acidification to restoration of coastal ecosystems.

The panel will be facilitated by Tiahni Adamson, currently the lead community engagement officer for CH4 Global. As a Torres Strait Islander woman descended from the Kaurareg Nations of Thursday Island, and Wildlife Conservation Biologist, Tiahni works diligently on a variety of external projects to nurture country, find solutions to our climate crisis and advocate for First Nations justice and land rights.

“Our Marine Home” is part of a series of conversations held during the Nature Festival exploring the nature in our home of South Australia. These conversations are held by multi-disciplinary key players to discuss what is currently happening, barriers to solutions in South Australia and opportunities at the community, industry and state level.

This series of events was formed from a partnership between Nature Festival, the State Library, the Environment Institute at the University of Adelaide and Dynamic State.
