New DNA sequencing technologies have allowed researchers to identify the thousands of bacteria making up the microbiota. This information is crucial to identifying how we can manipulate our microbiota towards a healthy state.

Andrew Farrer, who recently won the national 3MT (Three minute thesis) competition, gives us the lowdown on how our microbiota might be causing disease, and what we can can do about it, in the latest eScience mag.
