Funding for Glossy Black Cockatoo allow Environment Institute members to continue recovery on Kangaroo Island

We are delighted our researchers continue to step up and respond to the ongoing needs of bushfire recovery efforts.

In collaboration with the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board, Environment Institute member, Dr Prowse has been awarded funding through the Wildlife and Habitat Bushfire Recovery Program. He will be developing a revegetation strategy to support the conservation of the South Australian Glossy Black-Cockatoo.

The project will undertake emergency interventions to safeguard the Kangaroo Island Glossy Black Cockatoo. Recovery actions will include restoration of feeding and nesting habitat, protection of nestlings from nest predators and competitors, and monitoring of breeding success, flock movement and adult survival to guide our restoration efforts.

Dr Thomas Prowse will identify priority areas for restoration of sheoak feeding habitat, following the recent bushfires on Kangaroo Island, to support current and future flocks on the island. This vital research has the potential to protect an iconic species on Kangaroo Island.

The research is conducted with the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board (formerly known as Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Board) and is partnering with the Kangaroo Island Glossy Black Cockatoo Recovery Team. They have received $405,000 in government support.
