A groundbreaking study has revealed that 35 freshwater fish species across Australia are at risk of extinction, including the Kangaroo River perch, which hasn’t been seen in the wild for over 26 years.

Can scientists really bring extinct species back to life?
A thought-provoking discussion on ABC Radio featuring the Environment Institute’s Associate Professor Jeremy Austin from the University of Adelaide. The topic? The recent advancements in de-extinction led by the biotech company Colossal, particularly their efforts to sequence the thylacine genome using well-preserved DNA in the Tasmanian tiger.

Protecting Australian wildlife: insights from a latest study
A published article in The Conversation and authored by University of Adelaide’s Dr Phill Cassey and Sebastian Chekunov, highlights the booming multi-million-dollar industry of international pet trade; and Australian reptiles and frogs are in high demand. Their recent study sheds light on this critical issue, revealing that 16% of Australian reptile species and 3% of frog species are traded worldwide.

Innovative marine research: sea lions as underwater explorers
The vastness of our oceans holds countless mysteries, with much of the seabed remaining uncharted and unexplored. Nathan Angelakis, researcher at the University of Adelaide, highlights a staggering truth: “For most of the ocean, we don’t know what the bottom looks like.” To tackle this challenge, Angelakis and his team turned to an unlikely set of underwater explorers—Australian sea lions named Daphne, Phoebe, Iris, and Pasithea.
