Process and judging

Process 

  1. Entries judged by panel from the Environment Institute, The Advertiser and the Australian Science Media Centre.
  2. 12 semi- finalists will be selected.
  3. Semi-finalists invited to the University of Adelaide to meet students and staff, relevant to their entry.
  4. Entry expanded into 250 word article with The Advertiser journalist, adding relevant illustrations.
  5. Top three selected.
  6. Three entries published by The Advertiser (online) in Adelaide Now.
  7. Articles will be open to comment from school or undergraduate university students.
  8. Online comments collated and final version of the articles, of up to 650 words developed.
  9. These will be judged by the panel and the general public.
  10. Competition winner and placegetters determined by combined contribution from these two groups.
  11. Winner will have their opinion piece published by The Advertiser.
  12. The Environment Institute will assist all finalists in making their contributions available at their schools
  13. A 12-month online subscription to The Advertiser (Adelaide Now) and special certificate will be provided to all 12 finalists, cash prizes awarded to the top three placegetters.

Judging

Judges will be looking for entries that challenge the current climate change outlook and provide practical but innovative solutions. Entries will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • Critical thinking
  • Practicality
  • Effectiveness
  • Value
