IndoDairy 2

Background
Demand for dairy products in Indonesia has grown over recent decades, and is set to grow substantially, with the Government of Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal policy “Makan Bergizi Gratis”. However, domestic production accounts for less than 20% of milk consumed in Indonesia and the sector faces a multitude of constraints to improve quantity and quality of milk produced locally.
Building on the lessons and achievements of IndoDairy 1 which demonstrated the critical role of the village-level dairy cooperatives in developing smallholder dairy value chains in Indonesia, IndoDairy 2 will focus on evaluating service provision approaches and value-chain interventions to support milk cooperatives to grow the smallholder dairy sector of Indonesia, with the end goal of improving both the quantity and quality of locally produced milk.
The IndoDairy 2 project will utilise the established partnerships from the first phase in West Java, Indonesia and expand into a new province (Central Java) following Government priorities and the potential for research activities to highlight the relative impact in these less developed dairy value chains.
Project aims objectives
Aim: Increasing production and improving livelihoods of smallholder farming households by supporting milk cooperatives in the Indonesian dairy sector to deliver improved services and increase value chain participation of smallholder dairy farmer members.
The project will address the following objectives:
- Objective 1 - To understand the diversity of KUDs and the agricultural extension and advisory system (AEAS) that supports them2. Develop a pilot traceability case study using software solutions based on the insights obtained from key stakeholders for selected agricultural commodities.
- Objective 2 - To test and evaluate interventions with case study KUDs using participatory action research approaches
- Objective 2A - To support case study KUDs to incentivise farmers using new service provision approaches to drive market performance
- Objective 2B - To assess business models to improve inclusiveness of women and smallholder farmers with case study KUDs
- Objective 3 - To support the integration of lessons into the policy enabling environment to support evidence-based policy decisions and project development
