Accelerating Decarbonisation: Insights from Professor Göran Roos Lecture

Göran Roos Lecture

Earlier this week, ISER hosted by Adjunct Professor Göran Roos to present a public lecture held at the University of Adelaide. The lecture titled "Accelerating Decarbonisation Through Industry Hubs: Lessons from Europe’s Experience" delves into the transition to a net-zero, circular economy, as it poses a major challenge for energy-intensive industries.

The lecture examined how European industrial hubs successfully navigated the shift toward sustainability, while reducing emissions in steel, cement, chemicals, and aluminium industries.

Key topics included:

  • Pivotal role of circular economy principles in achieving emission reductions, evidence suggesting that material efficiency could contribute up to 50% of required emission reductions by 2050.
  • The importance of cross-sectoral collaboration, with examples like Sweden’s HYBRIT project and Denmark’s Kalundborg industrial symbiosis network.
  • Discussion on region-specific transition pathways, economic and technical barriers, and the disparities in decarbonisation progress across Europe.
  • Insights into policy mechanisms like Carbon Contracts for Difference (CCfDs) to support sustainable industrial investment.

By drawing on comprehensive research, policy evaluations, and industry case studies, Professor Roos was able to provide critical insights into effective decarbonisation strategies and their relevance for South Australia’s industrial future.

During his visit Professor

We thank all those who attended and  Adjunct Professor Göran Roos for presenting.
