Executive Dean's message

David Lewis

The diversity of activities in the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology broadly reflects our commitment to innovation, sharing and creating knowledge, and being prepared for the challenges of the future.

Our education and research activities span all three campuses, and our co-location with major national and global research organisations keeps our researchers, and our students, at the forefront of developing technologies and the latest discoveries in STEM.

Our staff are frequently acknowledged for their contributions to their disciplines. Recent successes include:

  • Dr Liz Reed (School of Biological Sciences) was named a Superstar of STEM by Science & Technology Australia for 2025
  • Associate Professor Claudia Szabo (School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences) received a 2024 Award for Teaching Excellence, as part of the Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT)
  • Mary Gonzalez (School of Chemical Engineering) was awarded the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) fellowship
  • Professor Michael McLaughlin AM (School of Agriculture, Food and Wine), elected as a Fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors, the fourth University of Adelaide expert to be honoured as such.

Looking ahead, a highlight of the annual SET calendar is the Australian Rover Challenge, from 27-30 March. During this robotics competition, university students from across Australia and around the globe battle it out in a full-scale Lunar mission, using semi-autonomous rovers that they have designed and built themselves.

Research in the Faculty is solving real-world challenges in everything from artificial intelligence, space exploration, advanced materials, energy solutions, sustainability, agriculture, food security, biotechnology, health technologies, and environmental science, to name a few; underpinning a comprehensive suite of degree programs of which the University can indeed be proud.
