Study Plans
Study plans are a useful guide to help plan your enrolments each year.
Every degree (and every major) has a dedicated study plan, which is your best guide to understanding the Academic Program Rules and requirements of your program.
Your degree is made up of two types of courses:
- "Core" courses - essential subjects that you must complete at each year level in order to obtain your degree.
- "Closed, Specific or Approved" electives: These will be courses that need to be selected from a specific list included on the study plan or program rules.
- "General or Open" electives: these electives can be chosen from any course offered by the University of Adelaide, that you meet the requirements for. Please check the availability, restriction and incompatible section on the Course Planner or Course Outlines.
- "Broadening" electives: Same as "General or Open" but it cannot be from your study area.
Did you know? You can access a full list of courses offered by the University of Adelaide via Course outlines. Select Advanced search (under the red search button on the right-hand side), select the options (Level of study, year etc.), then press the red search button.
Different degrees have different numbers of core and elective subjects. Your key to understanding which subjects you need to enrol in and which you have the freedom to choose is your Study Plan.
Courses that you take at Level I (first year) give you the knowledge and skills to allow you to take more advanced courses at Level II and III. It is very important to understand which courses you need to study in your first year to set you up for the pathway that you want to take in the later years of your degree.
