Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. The Professional Certificate in Nuclear Law examines both international legal and domestic legal regulation relating to nuclear energy, with particular focus upon the law relating to nuclear safety, safeguards and security. Students will examine topics including the AUKUS arrangements, nuclear energy and human health, impacts upon the environment, nuclear trade, nuclear accidents and liability, and nuclear waste management. In addition, the program will appeal to those wishing to further develop their scholarly skills in legal research and writing.
The core Nuclear Regulatory Law course is taught intensively and is followed by a research project in nuclear law completed over a semester. Graduates of this program may be eligible to progress into programs into which this qualification is nested, including the Graduate Certificate in Law, Graduate Diploma in Law, Master of Laws and/or Master of International and Security Law, with credit for their courses completed in the Professional Certificate in Nuclear Law.
The Professional Certificate in Nuclear Law is a non-AQF qualification with a standard full-time duration of 0.5 years. Students entering the program would normally be expected to hold a Bachelor of Laws, or a Bachelor of Commerce which includes the study of commercial or business law. Students with other qualifications or significant experience in a relevant field will be assessed on a case by case basis.
