The AUGU / R.C. Heddle Award is funded by the Adelaide University Graduate’s Union to celebrate the memory of Dr Robert Heddle, past President of the Adelaide University Graduates Union and honours his significant contribution to the Graduates Union and the greater University of Adelaide community.
The award supports a full-time PhD or MPhil student who has completed their Confirmation of Candidature review with travel or the purchase of equipment or materials related to their program of research. The award is open to international and domestic candidates

The award will be a once-off grant of up to $4,000. Grants are made on the condition that they are used solely for the purpose stated in the application

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • be enrolled in a higher degree by research at the Adelaide University;
  • have completed the Confirmation of Candidature review;
  • be able to demonstrate that the proposed travel or purchase of equipment is essential for the pursuit of their research (this may include travel to the partner university to undertake a joint PhD program, invitations to continue aspects of their research, conduct laboratory work, present at conferences, or take part in other related activities such as data collection, use specialist libraries, facilities, conduct interviews etc); and
  • be undertaking any proposed travel, or purchase of equipment, within the 12-month period following approval of award.
  • travel must be arranged and booked via the Adelaide University’s designated travel provider

 

Applicants are ineligible if they:

  • have not completed the Confirmation of Candidature review;
  • have already completed the travel (no retrospective applications will be considered);
  • are travelling to only attend (not present) at conferences or seminars;
  • are travelling to their home country, state or town;
  • have previously held a Research Abroad or Research Travel Scholarship (for any program of study); or
  • are in the last 6 months of candidature or in a period of extended candidature.

Selection criteria

The scholarship will be awarded via a competitive selection process managed by the Adelaide University Graduate Research School, based on academic merit, research potential, benefit of travel/equipment to the applicant’s Graduate Research Program.

Important information

Successful recipients must:
(for any proposed travel) 

  • return to their program of studies at the Adelaide University at the end of the travel period; and
  • provide a short report of their research travel activities (maximum one page) to the Adelaide University Graduate Research School within one month of their return, endorsed by the Principal Supervisor; or

(for any proposed purchase of equipment or materials)

  • provide receipts/tax invoices as proof of purchase of any equipment.
