In 1987, an endowment was established by contributions from the State, the University, professional colleagues and friends for the purpose of providing a number of postgraduate travelling fellowships to commemorate the services rendered to the University by Professor D R Stranks AO, Foundation Chair of Inorganic Chemistry 1964-1973, Vice-Chancellor of the University 1977 to 1986.
The purpose of the fellowships is to provide assistance for travel to enable the Adelaide University’s postgraduate candidates to pursue some aspects of their research and investigations outside the State of South Australia.

Eligibility
Applicants must:• be enrolled as a postgraduate candidate at Adelaide University, undertaking research in the area of Science and Technology
• have successfully completed their Confirmation of Candidature review
• be available to travel prior to their final year of candidature
• submit an application in consultation with their Principal Supervisor, by the closing date for travel in the subsequent twelve (12) months.
Applicants are ineligible if they:
• have not completed the Confirmation of Candidature review;
• are travelling to only attend at conferences or seminars;
• are travelling to their home country, state or town to undertake research; or
• are in the last 12 months of candidature or in a period of extended candidature
Selection criteria
The scholarship will be awarded via a competitive selection process managed by the Adelaide University Graduate Research School, based on academic merit, research potential, benefit of travel/equipment to the applicant’s Graduate Research Program.Important information
Successful recipients must:(for any proposed travel)
• have received approval for study leave. Funds will not be made until study leave has been approved;
• provide a short report of their research travel activities (maximum one page), and a financial acquittal on the approved template to the Adelaide University Graduate Research School within one month of their return to South Australia, endorsed by the Principal Supervisor;
• should a recipient of the fellowship not proceed with travel, funds are to be repaid to the Adelaide University within three (3) months of the cancelled travel notification being received by the Adelaide University Graduate Research School.
• All travel must meet the University Student Travel Risk Policy, and student travel must be arranged and booked through the University’s official travel provider.
