With more than 70 volunteer groups across our Waite, Roseworthy and North Terrace campuses, there are a variety of volunteering roles available throughout the year. Only volunteer groups that are currently recruiting will be listed on this page.

Current volunteering opportunities

  • Career Mentor

    Do you remember what it was like to start your first job out of University? The challenges, the highlights and the lessons learned since then. This is your chance to share that knowledge.

    Facilitated by the Career Services team, our mentoring programs connect current students to industry professionals. Mentoring is a learning relationship that focuses on the mentee's goals and development. Our programs provide students with an opportunity to develop career management skills and increase employability in their industry, based on their mentor's insights, guidance and personal perspectives. Mentors engage in the learning and coaching process, helping students to achieve their goals.

    Responsibilities

    • Facilitate the development of your mentee, based on their needs
    • Act as a resource, adviser or coach based on their needs.
    • Participation in the program is based on both your availability and students' requirements.

    Who can apply?

    We welcome expressions of interest from all industry professionals, of all experience areas, levels and personal backgrounds. You can be based in Adelaide, interstate or overseas. You do not have to be an alumnus of the University to be involved.

    Current students of the university are unable to apply for this volunteer role.

  • International Student Support - Talking With Aussies Volunteer

    The Talking With Aussies program helps international students improve their conversational English skills. Volunteers come from a range of age groups and backgrounds, and include students, staff, retirees and working professionals.

    Responsibilities

    • To meet with students an hour a week for a Semester.
    • To foster students’ language development, helping them to communicate with confidence, strengthen their pronunciation, and Aussie slang. This will be of a general nature; the program is not a tutoring or editing service.
    • To engage in a range of conversation topics which may help the student become more familiar with Australian customs and culture.

    Who can apply?

    Applicants should have a good standard of spoken English, and the ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and age groups with a patient and friendly manner. Students, staff, alumni and public can volunteer for this position. Current international students of the university are unable to apply for this volunteer role.

  • Neurodiversity Mentor

    The purpose of the Neurodiversity Project is to create a mentoring program for Neurodivergence students at the University of Adelaide. Neurodivergent conditions include; Specific Learning Disability (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD).

    This group of mentors will provide support of first year neurodivergent students who have begun their studies at the University of Adelaide in 2025 and become key contacts for their neurodivergent mentees. Mentors will meet their mentees at four critical points in the semester and be a point of contact for the mentee to refer to when they are in need of resources, direction to key services, and introductions to the university community. Neurodiversity Mentors will be welcomed into the Student as Leaders Network. This network includes access to further professional development workshops and connects you with 400 other student leaders.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide support to their mentees that relates to study and their mentees transition to university.  
    • Provide tips and strategies on how to manage their mentees study load and work-life balance.  
    • Introduce their mentee to the wider campus culture and community and encourage their mentee to attend campus events.
    • The mentor is required to undergo 3 hours of in-person training prior to meeting their mentee. 
    • Show their mentee around campus and help to assist with wayfinding around campus.  
    • Introduce their mentee to the various support services available. 

    Who can apply?

    Applicants must be current university students who have completed at least 1 year of university; have lived experience of neurodivergence or a passion for equity and inclusion of neurodiverse people; some basic knowledge of neurodivergent conditions.  Applicants must have clear communication skills, well organised, an active listener, friendly and collaborative.

    Please note this program will pilot in 2025 with information and training sessions being held in late January.

  • Social Media Officer PASS Program

    The PASS Social Media Officers contribute to the promotion of the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) Program to students and staff by coordinating the creation and posting of content advertising program details and showcasing PASS Leader activities and contributions. PASS Social Media Officers, working with the PASS Coordinator and Student Academic Skills Support Officer, will be responsible for the development and maintenance of PASS Social Media profiles, including the planning and scheduling of regular posts, and the coordination of content creation by PASS Leaders in line with the PASS Marketing and Promotion Plan.

    Responsibilities

    • Plan and schedule regular social media posts promoting PASS activities, leaders and program details.
    • Create digital content for social media posts including photographs, digital flyers/posters, interviews, and mini-blog entries for PASS social media accounts.
    • Monitor and respond to basic comments and queries on PASS social media accounts.  
    • Identify and re-post relevant material to PASS social media accounts. 
    • Identify and follow relevant social media accounts from the broader university and peer learning/mentoring programs.
    • Coordinate guest posting by PASS Leaders and staff. 
    • Commit 1-3 hours per week across the teaching year.

    Who can apply?

    Applicants must be current university students in their second semester of study with a working knowledge of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter Snapchat. PASS Leader experience is highly regarded. Applicants must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and time management. They must be self-driven, work independently with a positive and professional attitude. Training and professional development opportunities will be provided. Media and Marketing students encouraged to apply.

  • Social Media Officer Writing Centre

    The Writing Centre Social Media Officers contribute to the promotion of the Writing Centre to students and staff by coordinating the creation and posting of content advertising services, resources, study skills advice, team contributions and program details.   • Sports Volunteering

    With over 35 sporting clubs Adelaide University Sport & Fitness (AUSF) has many volunteering opportunities through events, clubs and national competitions. Volunteering can be a rewarding experience, providing pathways for your career, interests and development. At AUSF we value our volunteers and have a number of reward incentives in place.

  • Urrbrae House School's History Program

    This interactive schools program for primary students is usually held on Wednesday mornings at the Waite Historic Precinct during school term. This program immerses primary school students into the recreated world of 1892. Our volunteers contribute by developing a character through role-play and costumes to help recreate the past for the children.

    Responsibilities

    • lead children through various activities
    • role-play characters from the 1890s
    • dress in period costumes from the 1890s
    • adhere to the Child Safety Protection Policy and Code of Conduct
    • undertake required training and screenings for the role

    Who can apply?

    Applicants can be alumni, staff or members of the public. This role suits those that have an interest in history and enjoy working with children. Volunteers must have excellent communication skills, be reliable, punctual and committed to the program. Please note that the program runs most Wednesday mornings during school term. This is a long term volunteer role and requires a working with children check before commencement.

  • Waite Conservation Reserve

    The Waite Conservation Reserve is noted as one of the largest and best surviving examples of Grey Box Grassy Woodland in South Australia. Home to more than 200 species of native plants as well as kangaroos, koalas and echidnas, it is a valuable asset to the University of Adelaide and the people of South Australia.

    The Friends of Waite Conservation Reserve are a group of volunteers who work with the University of Adelaide to maintain and improve the natural value of the reserve and the visitor experience.  Volunteers play an important role in the maintenance, rehabilitation and day to day functioning of the reserve through their working bees/bushcare days.

    Responsibilities

    Volunteers can take on many roles including; 

    • weeding
    • tree-planting
    • track maintenance
    • biological survey and monitoring

    Working bees/bushcare days are open to anyone, and offers a chance for you to learn about nature while improving your fitness and making a practical difference in a fun, supportive and inclusive environment with like-minded people.
