Guidelines for use

Please consult with the Online Media Unit before attempting to use or copy the University of Adelaide web site templates or components.

Offline development

It is not recommended to develop webpages in 'live' mode. Please create a development version, and consult with the Online Media Unit before your pages are uploaded. In addition, the following recommendations should be followed when using the University of Adelaide web templates:

University stylesheets and branding

The University stylesheets should always be used. They are designed for optimal viewing by a large range of browsers and systems. Please consult with the Online Media Unit before using customised stylesheets.

Use standard University template elements

The various elements of the University templates, such as navigation, pagehead and footer are predefined and should not be altered without consulting the Online Media Unit.

University Web Server

Using the University Web Server provides simple updates of centrally supported templates, graphics, stylesheets, etc. The University Web Server is supported by ITS and has the security of sitting within the University firewall.

Avoid using frames

Frames cause numerous problems, including: they are difficult to bookmark, confuse search engines and some text to voice readers cannot interpret them.

Avoid drop downs for navigation or commands

These should be avoided because they break accessibility guidelines and users find them confusing because they can not see all available options.

Unfinished content

Broken links, incomplete pages or 'Under Construction' should be avoided. It is preferable to hide menu items until the content is complete.
