Adelaide University is offering a targeted package of support for current and future students and workers impacted by the Whyalla Steelworks blast furnace closure.
“Our Whyalla Campus has been part of the local community for more than 60 years. We want to play our part for the region as its people navigate this period of significant economic and workforce transition,” said Adelaide University Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Nicola Phillips.
Adelaide University’s Standing with Whyalla support package will include free foundation programs, diploma pathways and flexible ongoing study options, giving affected workers multiple entry points into Adelaide University regardless of their previous education or experience.
The University will offer tailored advice on study, reskilling and future careers, through initiatives such as a Future Skills and Business Transition Day, delivered in partnership with TAFE SA, and will contribute to an Employer Connect event delivered by the State and Commonwealth governments, to be held on 15 October in Whyalla.
Alongside the options for education and upskilling that will be offered at no cost, the package will also include an expanded range of grants and scholarships to make it possible for those affected by the closure of the blast furnace to consider university study or to continue the studies they have already started.
“Importantly, this tailored package will be accessible both to current students who will continue their studies in 2027 and to those who may now be considering for the first time whether to enrol at Adelaide University,” Professor Phillips said.
“We stand alongside Whyalla throughout this uncertain period, and I hope that by offering this package of support and opportunities for the community, Adelaide University will continue to be a positive force for the city’s future.”
Adelaide University will be working closely with the Government of South Australia, TAFE SA and other organisations to make sure that there is a coordinated approach based on community needs.
