Election Policy

1. The purpose of our policy

This policy sets out the principles under which Adelaide University conducts elections for relevant bodies.

It establishes the governance-level responsibilities for elections of positions on Council, Academic Board, and other University bodies ensuring they are conducted in a manner that is fair, transparent, consistent, and supports meaningful participation in University governance.

Please read this policy in conjunction with the Election Procedure which sets out the detailed processes for conducting elections.

This policy provides authority to maintain the Election Procedure.

2. Who our policy applies to

2.1 Inclusions

This policy applies to all elections for elected positions on University Council, Academic Board, Committees and other governance bodies and any other body where positions are filled through election.

It applies to:

  • staff
  • students
  • any other members of the University community eligible to participate in elections.

2.2 Exclusions

This policy does not apply to:

  • appointments made outside an election process
  • external governance bodies not administered by the University.

3. Our election policy principles

Adelaide University conducts elections in a way that reflects good governance, integrity, and inclusion.

3.1 We assure fairness and independence

Elections are conducted impartially, ensuring all candidates and electors are treated equitably.

3.2 We operate with transparency

Election processes, timelines, and outcomes are clearly communicated to support trust and accountability.

3.3 We encourage participation and inclusion

The University encourages broad participation in elections and actively promotes engagement across diverse groups, including those who may be under-represented.

3.4 We maintain confidentiality and integrity

Voting is conducted by secret ballot, and systems are designed to protect the confidentiality, security, and integrity of the election process.

3.5 We are accountable for election outcomes

Election outcomes are formally declared, recorded, and reported to the relevant governing body.

3.6 We deliver consistency and good governance

Elections are conducted consistently across the University and align with governance requirements and institutional values.

Relevant body means the university body, committee or board which contains the elected position.
