Supporting food education, research and events

Bring your ideas to life in our fully equipped, industry standard Food Innovation Laboratory. Based at Adelaide University’s Waite Campus, the space supports food eduation, sensory analysis, research, industry collaboration and food-focused events. The Laboratory combines a commercial kitchen with analytical equipment, providing you the tools to develop, test and refine early-stage concepts. Users can take products from initial trials through to final development, including evaluation in our sensory booths.

The bookable Food Innovation Laboratory accommodates up to 50 participants for education, training and events. The lab features live demo technology and ISO-certified food safety systems.

Our facility has an integrated sensory suite enabling real-time testing, data-driven insights and seamless product development from concept through to final evaluation.

About the Food Innovation Laboratory

The Food Innovation Laboratory can accommodate up to 50 people, making it ideal for tertiary education practicals, large workshops and industry training (with two participants per bench). There is also a dedicated sensory suite with eight controlled booths and integrated iPads for real-time data collection and consumer testing. Overhead camera systems are installed on demonstration benches, perfect for live presentations and event showcasing.

The Food Innovation Laboratory operates in accordance with Australian Food Safety Standards (ISO 22000), supported by our HACCP Food Safety Plan.

Our equipment

Work with commercial-grade equipment, including:

  • Combi ovens (2 × Hobart HEJ201E-45LA)
  • Blast chiller
  • Vacuum packing system (VACPAC DZ-350/M)
  • Dehydrator (Bench Foods 32V-CUD)
  • Proofer and holding cabinets (Moffat Turbofan P85M12)
  • Deep fryers, air fryers, and microwaves
  • Electric and gas cooktops
  • Canning equipment and benchtop autoclave (Tuttnauer 2840 ELP-D).

  • Texture analyser (Stable Micro Systems TA.XTplusC)
  • Rotational viscometer (Lamy Rheology B-One Plus LR)
  • Bostwick consistometer
  • HunterLab colorimeter (ColorFlex EZ)

  • Water activity and moisture systems (Graintec 2, Aqualab 4TE)
  • Vacuum freeze dryer (NovaDryer DHF400/DHF600).
