Ensemble Lumen

Discover one of Australia’s most compelling new chamber groups

Quickly earning critical acclaim for both its individual artistry and collective vision, Ensemble Lumen unites a cohort of leading performers whose international careers span solo, chamber, and orchestral performance, festival leadership, and recording.

Formed in 2025 by faculty of the Elder Conservatorium of Music and School of Performing Arts at Adelaide University, the ensemble’s name is drawn from sub cruce lumen (“the light of learning under the Southern Cross”), the historic motto of the former University of Adelaide, and stands as a nod to the legacy of this foundational institution, reflecting a shared commitment to illuminating the chamber repertoire through performances of clarity, depth, and imagination.

In its inaugural year, Ensemble Lumen made major festival appearances at OzAsia Festival and the Adelaide Festival’s Daylight Express, was nominated for the Adelaide Critics Circle Award (Professional: Group – Music) and featured in national broadcasts on ABC Classic.

In 2026, Ensemble Lumen will appear in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s She Speaks series and undertake international tours to New Zealand and mainland China.

Upcoming concerts

Ensemble Lumen perform Shostakovich and Franck in the Elder Conservatorium's Lunchtime Concert Series on Friday 4 September in Elder Hall.

There is perhaps not a more exciting time in an artist’s career than the beginning: full of possibility and promise, works are infused with a certain youthful vigour. Ensemble Lumen guides audiences back to almost the beginning of Shostakovich and Franck’s careers.
