We’re thrilled to share that a new prehistoric fossil, Quaestio Simpson Aurum, has been discovered at Nilpena Ediacara National Park, dating back over 500 million years!

This remarkable find was led by Associate Professor Diego Garcia-Bellido Capdevila from the University of Adelaide’s Environment Institute and the South Australian Museum.

Key highlights:

  • The fossil is a circular organism measuring 5 to 10 cm in diameter, featuring a unique question mark structure that sets it apart from both modern and Ediacaran organisms.
  • Researchers initially had doubts about its classification until multiple specimens confirmed it as a new species, sparking excitement within the paleontological community.
  • The name "Simpson Aurum" honors Mary Lou and Anne Simpson, South Australians who have significantly supported fossil research and conservation.

This discovery not only enhances our understanding of ancient marine life but also emphasizes the rich biodiversity of the Flinders Ranges.

Looking forward to seeing where this research leads next!
