Championing Conservation: Dr Nina Wootton Recognised for Environmental Research Excellence
Dr Nina Wootton, a member of the Environment Institute, has been awarded with the Max Day Environmental Science Fellowship Award, from the Australian Academy of Science.
This prestigious award supports PhD students and early-career researchers dedicated to conserving Australian flora and fauna, promoting environmental protection, advocating for sustainable resource use, and enhancing ecosystem services through an interdisciplinary approach.
Dr Wootton's research viewed the microplastic pollution in traditional food sources and ecosystems in North-East Arnhem Land, identifying serious concerns and implications for human health and ecosystems. Through using social and ecological sciences, Dr Wootton's research combines both interdisciplinary study to fill critical gaps with the Yolŋu Traditional Owners to provide actionable outcomes to reduce and mitigate pollution, while protecting native ecosystemds and Indigenous food sources.
“As an early career researcher, securing funding for meaningful projects can be challenging, so I’m especially thankful for this opportunity." says Dr Wootton
"This award not only supports my current project but also opens doors for future initiatives that connect science, policy and industry for more sustainable environmental practices.”
The award is named in memory of the late Dr. Maxwell Frank Cooper Day AO FAA, the award pays tribute to his lifelong contributions to entomology, conservation, and forestry, as well as his dedication to supporting fellow scientists.
