Recovering declining birds in Australian landscapes

The regent honeyeater is a critically endangered bird endemic to southeastern Australia.

A significant number of threatened species and ecosystems have been identified outside the formal protected area system, predominantly within agricultural lands. Consequently, farming landscapes have emerged as central focal points in global restoration endeavours. On-farm restoration relies on landholders, who allocate their land for restoration activities in exchange for financial incentives (Ansell, Gibson, and Salt, 2016). Thus, financial incentives have become integral components of private lands restoration programs, driving stewardship behavior (Ramsdell, Sorice, and Dwyer, 2016).
