Prof Benjamin Eggleton - New Frontiers in Smart Photonic Sensors

Photonic sensors will provide a multi-faceted interface to the physical, chemical and EM environment, enabling high-performance information gathering. Their compactness will enable integration with other signal processing capabilities in a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that processes sensor data on-chip with only the extracted tactical information relayed to inform the decision-making and intelligence. The multiple data sources provided by these sensors can be integrated into a sophisticated Cloud – or Internet of Things - to provide enhanced, advanced situational awareness and enable smart, timely decision-making. I will review recent developments in smart sensor research with examples from the NSW Smart Sensing Network.
