Identification and quantification of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs)—extremely toxic chemicals—remain challenging due to their chemical diversity, and their inert optical and chemical nature. Our work presents a new optical system utilizing chemically-functional sensing platform to maximize sensitivity and selectivity to PFAS by monitoring its optical characteristics upon chemical interaction

Best medical care with antibiotics increasingly fails to defeat superbugs, stressing the need for better treatments. In a transdisciplinary collaboration with an industry partner, we developed a new technology producing plasma-activated water: When lightning strikes water, a powerful treatment is created that could even kill superbugs like Golden Staph.

This ‘state-of-the-art’ review describes the development and current status of calcium ion (Ca2+) sensors in tracing Ca2+ of cells, with a focus on the relevance of Ca2+ to insulin secretion in the pancreatic islets that govern metabolic homeostasis. Insights into Ca2+ sensors have a high potential to facilitate better understanding of islet function and development of novel interventions.
