Minimising the impact of frost-bite on Aussie crops
Spring radiation frost is estimated to cost Australian grain growers $360 million in direct and indirect losses every year. In a paper published in Frontiers in Plant Science, researchers at the University of Adelaide and the University of Wollongong have ranked the susceptibility to frost damage in wheat and barley germplasm (seed and tissues) under frost prone landscapes across Australia.

Study sheds new light on vein formation in plants
An international team of researchers including the University of Adelaide, has found plant hormones known as strigolactones suppress the transportation of auxin, the main plant hormone involved in vein formation, so that vein formation occurs slower and with greater focus.

The FieldExplorer, a new ground-based field phenotyping platform, has arrived at The Plant Accelerator, the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility’s (APPF) node at the University of Adelaide’s Waite campus, bringing new capability to accurately measure the performance of plants in different environments non-destructively and over time.

$7 million investment to unite genomics research in SA
Research institutes across South Australia are combining their expertise and resources to establish a state-of-the-art centre for genomics in SA. The South Australian Genomics Centre will open its doors on 1 July 2020 thanks to an investment of more than $7 million, including $2 million from Bioplatforms Australia through the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy.
