Gavin Wanganeen Aboriginal Scholarship

Impact of Giving

Supporting Aboriginal students to excel in their chosen field of study

The Gavin Wanganeen Aboriginal Scholarship supports disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students undertaking an undergraduate university degree at Adelaide University. This scholarship helps to reduce their financial burden, empowering them to create stronger foundations for success and reach their higher education aspirations.

“When I see the impact – Aboriginal students taking hold of their future and achieving their goals – I feel so proud, and I am truly moved by the generosity of people who have backed this project.”
- Gavin Wanganeen, scholarship patron.

Your donation today will directly support Aboriginal students pursuing university degrees, empowering them to achieve their goals and contribute positively to their communities.

About Gavin Wanganeen

Brownlow Medallist, premiership player, five-time All-Australian, Port Power Best & Fairest, and first Aboriginal Australian AFL Life Member, former football player, Gavin Wanganeen is genuinely admired by all who love the game.

More than that, Gavin has become a role model for Aboriginal youth – something he takes very seriously. That is why he lent his patronage and encouragement to a scholarship first set up by the University of South Australia to help Aboriginal students achieve their higher education goals. Established in 2005, this scholarship showcases Gavin’s commitment to providing opportunities for Aboriginal youth.

"Football has given me some wonderful opportunities, a strong sense of achievement and an understanding that role models can make a difference to people's lives. I believe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids need a range of role models – some in sport but also other careers.”
Gavin Wanganeen, scholarship patron.

Tiana's story

A proud Ngarrindjeri woman, Tiana has always carried a quiet determination to build a bright future.

“Growing up, I felt uncertain about the future and never knew where I could go or what my full potential was,” Tiana said. “But I always dreamed of achieving more and creating a path that could improve my life and my family’s."

Now in her second year of a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours), Tiana is the first in her family to attend university – an achievement that reflects both her resilience and commitment to forging new opportunities.

“Receiving the scholarship was incredible. I felt so much gratitude,” she said.

"This scholarship enabled me to purchase essential learning tools – resources that have deepened my understanding and built my confidence. I also reduced my work hours to spend more time studying," Tiana said.
