English Language Centre’s Collaboration in Indonesia in English‑Medium Instruction (EMI)

Adelaide University’s English Language Centre (ELC) has partnered with Indonesian institutions to support internationalisation, workforce development, and global competitiveness in higher education. Following visits to the University of Indonesia, Trisakti University, Mulawarman University, and six schools in East Kalimantan to assess demand for EMI and bilingual education, ELC academic trainers delivered targeted EMI professional development to lecturers and teachers. This training has strengthened teaching confidence, inclusive pedagogy, and curriculum quality, while directly supporting Indonesian government priorities to expand international classes, lecturer capability, and graduate employability through English proficiency.

New Colombo Plan scholars

Eight Adelaide University students received a New Colombo Plan scholarship to study at universities in Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines in 2026. This federal government initiative supports Australian undergraduate students to undertake study, language training, internships and work in the Indo-Pacific region, deepening international connections and enabling students to gain valuable global perspectives and networks. Across study areas including law, engineering, health, science and business, the 2026 cohort will apply discipline‑specific knowledge in diverse Southeast Asian contexts and engage in immersive academic and cultural experiences.

Timor-Leste study tour: beneath the waves

This study tour provides an opportunity for students from Adelaide University to visit Timor-Leste for a 14-day experience focusing on marine biodiversity, conservation issues, and the challenges of ensuring food security for this developing island nation. Run by the School of Biological Sciences, students learn monitoring methods for coral reefs, seagrasses and marine debris, community monitoring of no-take conservation areas, and the opportunities and risks associated with an increasing ecotourism sector. Students also visit the University in Dili and develop a better understanding of cultural, economic and environmental issues related to marine conservation and the sustainable use of marine environments.

Improving outcomes for orangutans in rehab

An Adelaide University researcher is leading a PhD project examining health challenges of orangutans in rehabilitation centres in Indonesia to improve long-term outcomes for the species. Veterinarian Dr Fransiska Sulistyo from the University’s School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences will work with multiple orangutan rehabilitation centres in Indonesia to collect and analyse data from medical records and biological samples for pathogen testing. The information collected will be crucial for practitioners and decision makers in rehabilitation centres to improve how they manage the health of the orangutans, and in turn, how the success of orangutan reintroduction and conservation can be strengthened.
