Museum of Classical Archaeology

Experience Ancient Greece and Rome in Adelaide

With more than 1700 items on display, Adelaide University's Museum of Classical Archaeology is the largest collection of artefacts from ancient Greece and Rome in South Australia.

Our teaching collection is used by undergraduate students majoring in Archaeology and Classics and also the postgraduate degrees in Curatorial and Museum Studies, allowing first-hand access in select courses.

The Director of the Museum is Senior Lecturer,  Dr Margaret O’Hea.

Museum collection

The museum displays a representative collection of glass, metal and pottery from the Bronze Age to the end of Antiquity. This includes artefacts from archaeological excavations in Egypt, Jordan and Iraq, from prehistoric hand-axes to pottery excavated by Sir Leonard Woolley at Ur in Mesopotamia and by Garstang at Beni Hasan in Middle Egypt.

We also have pottery from across the major periods in Greek prehistory and history, from Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece to Classical Athens and the wider Hellenistic world.

Our Italian collection includes pottery and metal from Etruria in northern Italy, as well as a modelled terracotta sarcophagus from Tarquinia. There are sculptural and architectural fragments, lamps and jewellery from Roman Italy, as well as material acquired under permit from the joint German-Australian Project at Pompeii in the 1980s. Thanks to a generous donation, we now also have a large collection of pottery and other objects from Roman Britain, as well as from Roman and Byzantine Egypt. These includes some papyri and also a woven textile fragment from Late Antiquity.

Events and support

The Museum holds public lectures throughout the year. We recommend following our Facebook page for updates.

We also welcome donations to support our work in promoting the study of Mediterranean archaeology across schools, the university, and the community. To donate, download the Adelaide University donation form and add Museum of Classical Archaeology next to “Other”. Learn more about supporting Adelaide University.

Visiting the Museum

We welcome school groups and interested community groups to book a supervised visit. Visits cost $200 for up to three hours, and consecutive school tours can be accommodated within this period. Due to limited space, the maximum group size is 20 people at any one time.

Unfortunately we do not currently have disability access, as there is a short staircase to our location in a heritage-listed building.
