About me
I am a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Allied Health and Human Performance at Adelaide University, with a background in mechanical engineering and biomechanics. My work focuses on turning human movement and sensor data into models and tools that practitioners, designers and organisations can use to make decisions.
My research spans three connected areas:
1. Human performance and human factors. I develop digital models of human size, shape and physical capacity to inform the design of workspaces, vehicles and equipment. This includes long-running work with Defence and industry on the accommodation of military personnel in platforms such as submarines, and with the iMOVE CRC and Australian transport agencies on national anthropometric data for transport design, including the public VFT_AUS virtual fit tool.
2. Wearable sensors and signal processing. I develop methods for extracting meaningful measures of movement and physical activity from body-worn sensors. This work began with population studies of use-of-time and physical activity, where the processing software I developed has been used across more than 20 studies and adopted by groups in Australia and the UK. It now extends to elite sport, including automated event detection from athlete-worn IMUs with Volleyball Australia, and pacing analysis with Paddle Australia.
3. Markerless motion capture and biomechanics applications. I lead the development of Go2Kin, an open-source multi-camera markerless motion capture pipeline, and supervise research applying pose estimation to sport, climbing and clinical rehabilitation.
I have published more than 65 peer-reviewed articles, have been awarded >AUD 6M in competitive and industry research funding, and supervise research students in sports analytics, wearables and computer vision. I collaborate with sporting bodies, Defence and industry partners, and research groups including the Australian Institute for Machine Learning, the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and the University of Leicester.
I am always open to discussing research projects, industry collaborations and research degree supervision. Please contact me by email.
