Profile of APrf Stewart Von Itzstein

About me

I am a computer science academic with a background across software engineering, computer science education, human computer interaction, data visualisation, game development, and cloud. My work sits across teaching, curriculum leadership, accreditation, industry engagement and applied research. I have held senior academic leadership roles, including Professorial Lead in IT, Acting Dean of Programs, Associate Head of School Programs and long-term Program Director roles. A major part of my work has been building practical, industry-connected computing education, where students learn the theory but are also expected to apply it through real projects, real tools and professional practice.

My work has been recognised through national and sector-level awards, particularly in relation to the Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship model. This program has received recognition through the 2024 Universities Australia Shaping Australia Awards in the Future Builder category, the 2025 Australian Defence Industry Awards for Training and Mentorship Program of the Year, and finalist recognition in the 2025 Defence and National Security Workforce Awards. These awards recognise the value of connecting university study with paid employment, industry mentoring and authentic workplace learning.

My work history spans university leadership, teaching, research and applied defence research. I have held academic and leadership roles, including Professorial Lead in IT, Acting Dean of Programs, Associate Head of School Programs, Associate Dean of Online Education and Program Director roles across multiple IT and software engineering programs. Before and alongside my academic career, I also worked as a research scientist with DSTO/DSTG in command decision environments, which helped shape my interest in applied computing, human decision-making, visualisation and systems that need to work properly in real settings.

My teaching has covered a broad range of computer science and software engineering areas, including programming, agile development, software architecture, and DevSecOps, cloud and virtualisation, web development, user interface and user experience design, game design, data visualisation and software quality assurance. A consistent theme in my teaching is that students should not just describe computing concepts, but should demonstrate that they can build, test, explain and defend their work. I have developed and taught courses using real industry tools such as Jira, GitHub, Docker, VMware, Unreal Engine, database systems and modern development environments, with a focus on authentic projects, supervised assessment, viva-style checking and professional practice.

I have been actively involved in national computing education and accreditation work through Engineers Australia and the Australian Computer Society. I am currently President of ACDICT, which involves sector-level engagement around computing education, policy, accreditation, industry needs and the future of ICT programs in Australia. I have also worked as an accreditation assessor, reviewing computing and software engineering programs against professional standards.
