Road safety management training for South Asian countries

Assisting lower and middle income countries to build road safety management capacity

Building road safety management capacity in lower and middle income countries is important for South Asia. The region is home to just 10 per cent of the world’s cars, trucks, and motorcycles, yet accounts for 27 per cent of global traffic deaths.

In late 2023 the Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) was awarded a contract by Palladium on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to lead and deliver a road safety management course for the South Asia Regional Infrastructure Connectivity (SARIC) Program.

Together with PACE (now known as Adelaide University’s Learning Futures team) and Martin Small Consulting, a course was pulled together in just under two months and delivered over two weeks in May 2024.

The course included 23 guest speakers and presenters from the road safety sector and from within CASR, in addition to four site visits and several interactive sessions including a Road Safety Minister.

Participants were selected by Palladium with input from the World Bank and included 17 middle to senior executive management professionals from government institutions in Bhutan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives and Bangladesh. Participants were grounded in Safe System theory and upskilled in road safety engineering and management principles, while developing the skills to apply a Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) lens to their work.

The course was selected as first in its category ‘Best Learning & Talent Development - Learning Impact (Industry Specific)’ at the LearnX awards held in Melbourne in late 2024.
