Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) and Autonomous Systems (AS) represent advanced technology that incorporates highly intelligent machines capable of performing tasks autonomously, without constant human supervision. These systems can undertake a wide range of functions, from everyday tasks to complex missions, making decisions and executing actions independently, with great precision and efficiency.
Centre for Advanced Defence Research in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (CADR-RAS)
The Centre for Advanced Defence Research in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (CADR-RAS) was established on 9 June 2021 as a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG).
CADR-RAS was created to provide a streamlined mechanism for undertaking defence-related research in robotics and autonomous systems (RAS), fostering collaboration between researchers, industry and Defence. Throughout its operation, the Centre played an important role in coordinating and advancing RAS research across Australia, helping to strengthen national capability and reduce duplication of effort across the sector.
The Centre focused on supporting Defence priorities through research, innovation and capability development in robotics and autonomous systems. Its key objectives included:
- Addressing Defence challenges through research and innovation in robotics and autonomous systems.
- Advancing understanding of autonomy and autonomous systems, including:
- Developing STEM education and training programs in robotics and autonomous systems for Defence personnel.
- Investigating collaborative and multi-agent autonomous systems.
- Enhancing human-autonomy teaming and human-machine interfaces.
- Improving machine perception, decision-making and planning capabilities.
- Developing prototype technologies based on cutting-edge research.
- Transitioning emerging technologies and research outcomes into practical Defence applications.
While CADR-RAS has now concluded, its contributions continue through the partnerships, research outcomes and capabilities established during its operation. The Centre's legacy remains an important part of Australia's defence innovation ecosystem and has helped lay the foundation for future advancements in robotics and autonomous systems research.
