About Environment Change and Health Outcomes (ECHO)
The Environment Change and Health Outcomes (ECHO) research group within the School of Public Health, led by Professor Peng Bi, is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to addressing the health impacts of climate change.
Our group conducts domestic and internationally significant research that identifies and delineates environmental and climatic hazards and their impact on public health. We explore how risk, adaptation, and preparedness messages and practices can build health resilience within communities. Our research is framed by a pragmatic approach to public health problems and provides translational evidence to the public, decision makers, and the broader research community.
The group has strong, ongoing collaborations with government organisations and stakeholders including SA Health, SA SES, SafeWork Australia, Bureau of Meteorology and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Over the last decade, we’ve been awarded 40 research grants including nine ARC, four NHMRC, four NCCARF, one AusAID and one ACSRF, totalling over $25 million. Our papers have been published in the most prestigious journals such as BMJ, Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Nature Climate Change, Nature Sustainability, Lancet Planetary Health, EHP etc. We also contributed the WHO Guidelines and Australian Government Climate Change and Health adaptation policies.
