Cold Showers and Mental Wellbeing Study

Exploring whether daily cold-water showers affect anxiety, depression, sleep, fatigue and wellbeing

About the study

This study is exploring whether daily cold-water showers affect symptoms of anxiety and depression, sleep, fatigue and wellbeing. Participants will be randomly assigned to either continue their usual shower routine or finish each daily shower with 90 seconds of cold water for 30 days. All activities are completed at home.

Participants will complete a short online survey each day, taking about 2–3 minutes, and longer online surveys at the beginning and at weeks 2, 4 and 6, taking about 15–20 minutes. The study also examines whether cold-water showering is practical, acceptable and safe.
