Explore ways to partner with SAiGENCI

The South Australian immunoGENomics Cancer Institute (SAiGENCI) employs a collaborative approach to cancer research and care by bringing together insights from clinicians, clinical and biomedical researchers, state and federal decision makers and the community.

Our collaborative approach to cancer research and care includes the valuable insights of clinicians, clinical and biomedical researchers, government bodies, and more.

Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN)

The Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) plays an important role in improving the health and wellbeing of South Australians.  It delivers world-class integrated healthcare and has a strong commitment to the delivery of clinical services in an environment supportive of, and informed by, many different research disciplines.

CALHN and SAiGENCI’s strong partnership demonstrates the valuable and vital collaboration between clinical and research communities. By connecting with industry, our research is translated and disseminated into local healthcare settings, ensuring people living with cancer can receive better treatment and care in South Australia and beyond.

Are you looking for an opportunity to take the next step in your research career? We have a number of research projects suitable for students at different stages of their scientific studies, including summer research placements for undergraduate students, Master of Research, Master of Philosophy (M Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

SAiGENCI will provide researchers early in their career with a stimulating and supportive environment to achieve highly ambitious research goals and build connections for their future careers.

All research opportunities will be based at SAiGENCI within the College of Health at Adelaide University in either the Adelaide Health & Medical Sciences (AHMS) building, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and/or the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN), all co-located on North Terrace in the Adelaide CBD.

Please review our research opportunities for 2026 and contact us to learn more. You may also be interested in developing your own project in conjunction with a SAiGENCI research supervisor.

Have you got an interest in or lived experience with cancer?

Individuals, family members and carers can join our Community Research Partners Advisory Group to keep updated on our latest research, or partner with us to drive better outcomes.

The Community Research Partners Committee

We are seeking consumers/advocates and community members with an interest in or lived experience with cancer (either personally or as a family member or carer) to join our SAiGENCI Community Research Partners Advisory Group.

The SAiGENCI Community Research Partners Committee is responsible for connecting the community to SAiGENCI researchers through a Community Research Partners Advisory Program. The program aims to create an active partnership between researchers and the lay community so that by working with community members, researchers are better equipped to conduct projects that identify and address the real needs of the community.

Our transformational work:

  • The research at SAiGENCI is broadly centred around the following research themes:
  • Understanding the mechanisms promoting response or driving resistance to currently available anti-cancer therapies
  • Discover the mechanisms driving tumour growth and malignant behaviour through signalling, epigenetic and reprogramming research
  • Identifying ways to make tumours more visible to the body's immune system and improve efficacy of immune therapies
  • Identifying new therapeutic targets, and ultimately new and more effective therapies
  • Take advantage of AI and computer modelling to predict disease recurrence, cancer progression and best suited clinical therapies.

By working closely with the South Australian Comprehensive Cancer Network (SACCaN), Local Health Networks and other agencies, our final goal is to translate findings from the bench to the bedside to better treatments and outcomes of cancer patients.

Become a member and be involved:

Members of the Community Research Partners Advisory Group will be actively involved with research scientists and will have an opportunity to stay updated about our projects and new findings, and to partner with research teams and other stakeholders to:

  • Discuss and contribute to new research ideas.
  • Help plan for how new research projects are designed and implemented.
  • Review and provide comments on grant applications also as part of the investigatory team
  • Assist in disseminating research findings within the community.

We stay connected:

Lay members of the Community Research Partners Advisory Group will be an integral part of our research and will be invited to attend meetings usually held at Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences building, North Terrace, Adelaide, or held online via Zoom/Teams and email correspondence.

Support is available to assist with:

  • Preparation of research documents and sitting fees ($40/hour)
  • Public transport to attend in person meetings (to/from meeting)
  • Car parking
  • Private vehicle transport (to/from meeting):  $0.81/km.

Responsibilities

SAiGENCI Research Group or project team are responsible for providing:

  • Information, training and development opportunities to members relevant to their role as Community Research Partners (as required).
  • Resources needed to undertake agreed tasks including reimbursement for consumer members.
  • Secretariat support to the Community Research Partners Advisory Group.

Community Research Partners are responsible for:

  • Sharing their knowledge, skills and experience to inform the research process.
  • Attending and actively participating in Community Research Partners Advisory Group meetings and responding to reasonable and agreed out-of-session requests for advice.
  • Participating, as agreed, in activities which promote the work of the SAiGENCI Research Group or project across the South Australian community.
  • Identifying and reporting an interest that is in potential or actual conflict with their involvement in the SAiGENCI Research Group or project or has the appearance of such a conflict.
