Addressing the future of agriculture through research and collaboration
The global food system is under pressure from climate change, resource constraints and growing demand. The Waite Research Institute (WRI) exists to help address these challenges by connecting research with real-world application. Working across agriculture, food and wine, we bring together expertise, infrastructure and partnerships to deliver solutions that support sustainable production, resilient systems and future-focused industries.
At WRI, we believe the future of agriculture depends on deeper collaboration, faster translation of research, and a clear focus on impact.
Our vision
We envision a world where agriculture is innovative, resilient and regenerative, nourishing communities, sustaining ecosystems and thriving in a changing climate. Through collaborative research, education and engagement, we drive transformative change across the food, agriculture, fibre and wine sectors. By connecting science, technology and industry, we help create the people, practices and systems needed to ensure sustainable food and fibre production for future generations.
Who we are
Named after Peter Waite, the Waite Research Institute continues a legacy of agricultural research excellence. Building on the foundations and legacy of the former Waite Agricultural Research Institute (WARI), we are internationally recognised for our contribution to fundamental and applied research, as well as for developing the next generation of researchers and translating science into industry outcomes.
Established in 2009–2010, WRI was created to build on this legacy and the unique strengths of the Waite precinct, bringing together co-located partners, leading facilities and interdisciplinary expertise to deliver research with real-world impact across Australia and globally.
How we work
Our approach is grounded in connection across disciplines, sectors and systems.
Supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure and strong national and international partnerships, WRI enables transdisciplinary research that links fundamental science with application. We collaborate with industry, government and the research sector to accelerate innovation, scale impact and respond to emerging challenges.
