Student Testimonial: Soham Sevak
Academic Program: Bachelor of Computer Science (Advanced)
My experience participating in the Career Access Mentoring program has been among the best extra-curricular experiences at the University. It was well-managed, the activities were thoughtful and helped me reflect on my meetings with my mentor and actively practice goal-setting too.
I was very lucky to be matched with Mark in this program. He brought a lot of experience from his time in the industry, both as a software engineer and a cyber-security specialist, along with openness and honesty in our conversations. Like many others, I was getting increasingly concerned about finding an internship over the summer break as November edged closer. Mark guided me with my preparation, pointing out helpful tips I could use to reduce anxiety during online video interviews and stressing the importance of a balanced schedule where I also make enough time for myself. He also encouraged me to look into the public sector, and I ultimately ended up working over the summer with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, SA Government!
Now I have a clear idea of the opportunities available to me as an international student, and how to set myself apart from the competition too. Reflecting on everything I learned after participating in this program, I can say I'm much more confident about my skills and also aware of what I need to work on. Talking to someone who is familiar with the industry's expectations of new grads can go a long way in helping you make yourself employment-ready before you graduate, and I strongly encourage all students to participate in this program.
