Pre-placement immunisation and screening requirements

There are several pre-placement requirements you’ll need to complete before you undertake any placement activities. Keep reading to understand immunisation requirements and tuberculosis screening.

Immunisation

Students undertaking clinical placements are required to have the appropriate level of immunisation and PCI screening.  

Prior to commencing placement, students are required to be immunised and screened for all infectious diseases outlined in the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening, and vaccination policy 2024, completed through a GP provider of your choice.  

You will be required to provide evidence of immunity or blood taken to determine your immunity status for a number of diseases – it is necessary for the GP to work through these requirements to complete the Adelaide University Immunisation Certificate of Compliance. You must retain all documents as evidence that you have been cleared to attend placement. 

Please Note: As students may be required to attend a variety of placement venues (SA Health and private venues), Adelaide University requires students to become fully compliant with all immunisation requirements, this includes completing the AU Certificate of Compliance, which ensures students will be accepted by all placement sites.

Tuberculosis screening 

As part of the requirements for your clinical placements, you must undertake screening for tuberculosis infection with the South Australian Tuberculosis Services (SATB) prior to any clinical placement. This is a South Australian Government requirement. 

It is the student's responsibility to acquire their Tuberculosis Screening Notification and take it with them to all clinical placements. 

How to complete your screening

1. Please complete the online screening form.
2. Upon completion of the form, you will receive an email from SATB advising you of further instructions to complete your tuberculosis screening. 
3. Once you have completed and submitted the questionnaire, please remember to check your email for your screening results.

If you have concerns you were exposed to tuberculosis (TB) whilst on an overseas placement or holiday, you must reapply for screening. 

Satisfying interstate immunisation requirements

In addition to completing the Adelaide University Certificate of Compliance, students undertaking a placement in another Australian state or territory should comply with the relevant state immunisation policies:

• NSW Health – Assessment, screening and vaccination requirements 
• NT Health – Student placements  
• Government of Western Australia Department of Health – Health Care Worker Immunisation Policy  
• Victoria Department of Health – Vaccination for healthcare workers  

Please note: the Victoria Department of Health information is also applicable for Tasmania.
