5 · Understanding

Gender identity

“Exploring your identity can happen at any age, but university is often when it starts.

Questioning your gender or sexuality can be hard. Coming out and transitioning can also be wonderful.”

Gender is a spectrum of social categories woven through everyday life. In Australia, people are assigned a gender at birth that often shapes how they’re raised — from favourite colours to how they’re allowed to express emotion.

That male/female binary doesn’t reflect the range of identities people use to make sense of who they are. Gender and sexuality are also two different things — one doesn’t dictate the other.

If you're working through it — or supporting a friend who is — headspace has clear explainers on gender identity and sexuality and sexual identity. The support above is also here for you.
