Global Mates Program

AU

Develop leadership skills and long-term friendships

This award-winning program allows participants to develop leadership skills and form long-term friendships, and it is often described as one of the most memorable highlights of student life by our current and past team members.

Both international and domestic students can be Global Mates.

A Global Mate (GM) is a current student who volunteers their time to help new international students settle into life in Adelaide and Adelaide University. Both international and domestic students can be Global Mates.

The GM role plays an important part in the delivery of ISS social programs. GMs are experts in creating world-class, inclusive experiences at our events from Orientation to regional excursions. They are responsible for engaging and connecting with students, sharing top-quality campus insider tips, and speaking authentically about the university community, the student experience, and their cultural identity.

Being a Global Mate is a super fun and rewarding experience. You get to meet people from all over the world, learn from different cultures, and have your input in amazing events and activities! Plus, every year, the team becomes a family. But it is important to remember that, while this is an unpaid position, it is an introduction to working in a higher education institution. Accordingly, a Global Mate is expected to act professionallyhonestly, and respectfully while fulfilling their responsibilities.

  • Global Mates receive free training on leadership, soft-skills and communication, event and risk management, teamwork, and cultural competency.
  • As student leaders, GMs are regularly offered free professional development programs, which enhance employability and look great on their CV and LinkedIn.
  • Global Mates are often the first to be invited to participate in volunteer and paid projects across the University, including collaborations with Marketing, Student Health and Wellbeing, and other University areas.
  • Outstanding Global Mates will receive excellent recommendations for work applications (upon their request), and can be considered for casual employment within the ISS team.

By the time Global Mates commence in their role, they must:

  • have completed at least one study period at the University
  • have achieved satisfactory academic results (i.e., not be failing any courses)
  • be enrolled in at least two courses in each study period
  • have at least two study periods remaining (i.e., two semesters), so they can be a GM for a full academic calendar year and
  • have completed their compulsory training (see next question).

  • GMs receive a comprehensive and compulsory induction and training program to prepare them for Orientation and the academic year.
  • Candidates who cannot attend induction and training or are unavailable during Orientation may not remain in the program.
  • At the start of the academic year, new team members will be provided with an official GM t-shirt to wear at all summer events. Then, based on their performance, they will also receive a GM winter jacket during mid-year training.

GMs are expected to volunteer in:

  • at least two full days during International Student Welcome in Semester 1 and 2
  • 75% of weekly CommuniTeas each semester, including planning, set up and clean up
  • one larger cultural event in Semester 1 and Semester 2 (e.g., Eid, Mid-Autumn Festival, Diwali celebrations)
  • a minimum of three excursions in the ISS Discover Adelaide program.

Global Mates are, at times, asked to take part in student panels during Orientation events, and in University committees, consultation sessions for student voice and feedback about specific issues and trends.

Importantly, Global Mates are expected to maintain continuous communication with the Program Coordinator and within the team via the Global Mates communication channels, and to acknowledge and respond to calls to support activities/events within a timely manner (i.e., within 48 hours).

Student experience

Global Mates are expected to:

  • interact with student participants to ensure a great experience in a manner that values student culture and diversity
  • assess student’ needs to provide customised, effective solutions, referrals and support
  • be present and proactive at events by engaging with students and encouraging them to network receive feedback and partner with the GM Coordinator to take appropriate action when facing issues.

Working with others

As member of a high functioning team, Global Mates should:

  • contribute to a respectful and inclusive team environment, by welcoming and celebrating differences to ensure a supportive and engaging experience for all pod members, Global Mates and student participants
  • establish supportive and productive relationships with all Global Mates
  • collaborate with Global Mates to support ISS operations and ensure optimal student experience.

Operations

Key operational responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • performing tasks in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and laws or regulations, including but not limited to the Volunteer Handbook, privacy policy, ESOS regulations
  • leading tours and other ISS activities to the highest standards, setting up and packing up events efficiently
  • understanding and adhering to people safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe work environment, taking initiative in dealing with operational challenges
  • using technology to support online activities, social media engagement, and provide positive student experiences.

  • Inclusion & Diversity: Creates/supports an inclusive environment that values/celebrates differences.

Meet the Global Mates

Here are some of the Global Mates team members who are always happy to help international students feel part of our Adelaide University community.

Annisa

Hi! My name is Annisa, I'm from Makassar, Indonesia, and I'm studying a Master of IT at Adelaide University. I love exploring different cultures and driving along the Adelaide coastline. When I'm not studying you'll find me at a cafe catch-up with friends, swimming, or chasing heights. On my first day at Uni I walked in excited, nervous, and not quite sure where I belonged. Being part of Global Mates has introduced me to people with the most diverse and fascinating life stories, and seeing students light up over over CommuniTea is one of my favourite things. Whatever you need, local community events, uni opportunities, or a good listener, come say hi!

Jason

Hello! I'm Jason, I'm from Colombia, and I'm currently studying a Master of Data Science. I enjoy going to events with friends, scuba diving, collecting watches, exploring new places, and helping my community. I am proud to be a Global Mate because it allows me to help new international students settle into uni and life in Australia, just as I had to do when I arrived. If you need a hand with anything, just let me know. We are a supportive international community, and we are here for you!

Aadarsh

Hey! I’m Aadarsh, and I’m studying my bachelor’s in health and biomedical science. My idea of a good time is hanging out with my friends, cooking and watching some sitcoms. I was born in Chennai, India, and have also lived in Dubai, Kenya, and now Australia. These experiences have shaped how I connect with people from diverse backgrounds. As a Global Mate, I’ve had the opportunity to meet students from around the world, share new experiences, and help others settle into uni life, while making my own journey more engaging and fulfilling. Feel free to reach out anytime and I’d be glad to catch up!

Hannah

Hii everyone! I'm Hannah from Vietnam, currently in my second year of Computer Science at Adelaide Uni. I'm into drawing, travelling, and cooking (keyword: trying not to burn things :)). Discover Adelaide is my absolute favourite part of this program as I love exploring new places and this city never disappoints! I'm more of a listener than a talker, but that means I'm always here if you need someone to chat with or have a question. Being an international student is a big change, and we'd love to make it a little easier for you. Don't hesitate to reach out!

Jared

Hi! My name is Jared and I’m from Singapore. I’m currently pursuing a Master of Environmental Policy and Management. I enjoy experiencing new places, trying different food and meeting people from diverse backgrounds.I’ve also been exploring my artistic side through painting and pottery, along with building LEGO plants and slowly beautifying my space with my creations. Moving to Adelaide has been a big change, so I get how overwhelming it can feel at first. Being part of Global Mates is my part of helping others settle in, find their footing and feel a bit more at home. Say hi if ya see me around!

Muhsina

Hi! I’m Muhsina, a first-year international MBA student from Kerala, India. I’m someone who loves getting caught up in something new every day, whether it’s art, random ideas or just exploring . You may spot me speed-walking with my wired headset, looking like I’m deep into rock music - but it’s actually 90s Mollywood on repeat!  I also love clicking photos and posting like an influencer (for my loyal 100 followers). I joined Global Mates as a fun way to be part of uni life and feel more connected on campus. Say hi if you see me around (bonus points if you guess what I’m actually listening to).

Imaya

Hi! I'm Imaya,  an Honours student in Laboratory Medicine from Sri Lanka. I really enjoy supporting students as they settle into university life and find their confidence both academically and socially. Being part of the Global Mates team gives me the chance to connect with people from different backgrounds and help create a welcoming, inclusive university experience. Outside of study, I like relaxing with friends, travelling around Adelaide, and making the most of campus life. If you ever have questions or just want a friendly chat, feel free to come say hello, I’m always happy to help!

Minhaj

Hi! My name is Minhaj, and I’m from Bangladesh. I’m studying Computer Science and love being part of the university community through Global Mates and student support activities. I enjoy travelling, exploring new places, meeting people from different cultures, and helping students feel more confident and welcomed at university. Being part of Global Mates means a lot to me because I know how important friendly support can be when starting life in a new country. If you see me around campus, feel free to come say hi!

Loreley

Hi! I’m Loreley, from Shanxi, China, currently studying a Master of Wine and Food Business. I’m curious about many things, especially wine, psychology, mindfulness and sci-fi. Volunteering at local events has made me more open. I enjoy exploring the city, bouldering and meeting people from different backgrounds. I’m happy to be part of the Global Mates team. I recall arriving feeling both excited and unsure - the support I received made a big difference. Now I’d love to pass that on. Fun fact: if you’re looking for winery recommendations, you’re talking to the right person!
