Course overview

This course will examine applications of biotechnology in the animal industries. Current and developing biotechnologies will be explored and their potential application to challenges facing the livestock industries, equine and companion animals, and wildlife conservation will be discussed and debated.

Topics addressed will include the contribution of biotechnology to animal models of human disease, use of biotechnology in food safety and biosecurity, and ways in which biotechnologies can improve animal production, health and welfare.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the limitations and challenges facing the animal industries and disciplines
  • Describe the biotechnologies available for application in industries or disciplines that involve animals
  • Explain the potential applications of current or developing biotechnologies to these animal related fields
  • Evaluate and discuss public and ethical concerns over the use of animal biotechnology
  • Locate and critically evaluate scientific literature and experimental studies relating to animal biotechnology and be able to effectively communicate the findings in oral and written form
