Course overview
This course aims to equip students with the advanced practical and theoretical skills that will allow them to undertake geochemical, isotopic and petrological investigations of igneous and metamorphic rock formation. Students will develop the knowledge-base and critical thinking skills to enable the interrogation of the information contained within igneous and metamorphic rocks and decipher the tectonic setting of formation and underlying large-scale Earth processes.
- Metamorphic Geology Processes
- Igneous Geology Processes
Course learning outcomes
- Assess and articulate how the occurrence and character of different igneous and metamorphic rock suites are governed by, and reflect, the Earth's tectonic processes
- Interpret and explain how absolute pressure-temperature information is extracted from minerals using thermodynamic expressions
- Identify correctly mineral assemblages and textures in igneous and metamorphic rocks to interpret key changes in physical conditions
- Organise, plot and evaluate geochemical datasets to extrapolate the evolution of igneous and metamorphic rock systems
- Organise, plot and evaluate elemental and isotope geochemical data to quantify igneous and metamorphic processes
- Demonstrate and apply common practical skills in igneous and metamorphic geology
