Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of renewable energy systems, with a primary focus on solar photovoltaic and wind energy technologies, their underlying physical principles, electrical integration, system modelling, and practical design considerations. The course equips students with the ability to analyse renewable energy resources, model and evaluate PV and wind energy systems, assess their technical, economic, and environmental performance, and design grid-connected, off-grid, and microgrid-based solutions incorporating energy storage. Through an Australian and global context, the course prepares students to understand the role of renewable energy in modern power systems and to apply fundamental engineering concepts to real-world renewable energy applications.

Course learning outcomes

  • Define and describe renewable energy concepts such as: solar/wind power conversion, maximum power point tracking, generation-duration curve, capacity factor, grid-connected inverters, islanding, levelized cost of energy
  • Describe the functions of the key components of solar and wind power generation systems and battery energy storage systems
  • Analyse the performance of a given solar generation system
  • Analyse the performance of a given wind generation system
  • Design a battery storage system to meet a given requirement
  • Integrate renewable energy systems at a system level
