Course overview

This course aims to develop advanced understanding and application of particulate processes and process dynamics and control. Students characterise particulate systems; analyse and design particulate operations, including filtration; identify powder hazards; and analyse and design advanced, plant-wide and digital control systems. The course also provides an overview of statistical process control and the industrial use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

  • Particulate Processes
  • Advanced Process Control

Course learning outcomes

  • Characterise and describe particulate systems in terms of their relevant physical properties.
  • Perform design calculations and analyse typical particulate processes, including mixing, size reduction and enlargement, storage and transport of powders, and filtration.
  • Describe the hazards associated with fine powders and recommend preventative measures by which these hazards can be reduced.
  • Determine process dynamic characteristics and specify advanced controllers, including dead-time compensation, cascade, feedforward, internal-model and model-based controllers.
  • Devise and justify plant-wide and multivariable control structures.
  • Use the z-transform to analyse discrete-time systems and design digital controllers.
  • Describe and evaluate how statistical process control, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are used in industrial processes.
