Course overview
This course develops students’ critical analytic skills to understand how ‘place’ and ‘policy’ interact in addressing real-world environmental and population challenges. Building on prior learning, weekly topics explore climate change, housing, urban expansion, migration, and environmental management. A one-day field trip offers distinctive first-hand exposure to South Australian landscapes and communities, complementing classroom learning. Upon completion, students will be equipped to critically analyse complex interactions between environment, population, and policy.

Course learning outcomes
- Critically analyse the dynamic interactions between environments, populations, and places that underpin major environmental and demographic challenges.
- Apply relevant geographical frameworks, tools, and methods to evaluate real-world case studies and propose evidence-based responses to policy problems.
- Synthesise interdisciplinary knowledge from population, urban, or environmental geography to construct coherent arguments in written and oral formats.
- Integrate first-hand field observations with theoretical concepts to critically assess how people interact with their environments in a specific South Australian setting.
