Course overview

Plant Biotechnology aims to develop student competency in presenting solutions to novel situations by applying knowledge of biotechnological techniques and molecular mechanisms impacting genotypic and phenotypic expression in plants in response to diverse environmental and developmental stimuli. Laboratory skills essential to detect genetic variation will be developed while students will learn by solving problems that consider how biotechnology is applied to dissect gene function and generate genetic variation for plant improvement and productivity. Knowledge and skills developed will enhance student ability to modify plant properties for global food security and commercial gains in biotechnological, environmental and agricultural industries.

  • Basics of plant biotechnology
  • Plant biotechnology in practice
  • Research planning project

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the molecular processes that occur during plant growth and development and how plants adapt to diverse environmental conditions
  • Discuss how biotechnology is used to understand complex processes within the plant, to detect genetic variation and for plant improvement; as well as to explain the ethical implications of that use
  • Critically evaluate scientific research papers and develop research proposals that apply their knowledge of plant biotechnological tools to address identified gaps and industry-relevant problems
  • Conduct experiments that use basic biotechnological techniques to understand genetic data and the regulation of gene and protein expression, in a safe and responsible manner
  • Communicate plant biotechnology-related content and issues effectively using oral and written means for both scientific and non-technical audiences
