Course overview
This course aims to develop students’ capacity for independent scientific inquiry through the design and completion of an original project in the field of Plant, Food and/or Soil Science. By formulating research questions, developing and testing corresponding hypotheses, and critically analysing data, students will deepen their understanding of scientific practice and develop advanced skills in project management, research conduct, and scholarly communication. Working with an academic supervisor, students will take ownership of a discrete research investigation while gaining insight to the broader contexts and responsibilities of Plant, Food and/or Soil Science research.

Course learning outcomes
- Formulate scientific hypotheses and proposals: Develop well-defined hypotheses based on critical analysis of scientific literature and construct detailed research proposals pertinent to Plant, Food and/or Soil Science.
- Design and execute scientific experiments: Plan, conduct, and meticulously document scientific experiments to test hypotheses, ensuring accurate maintenance of laboratory records and a data management plan.
- Analyse and interpret scientific data: Employ appropriate statistical and/or data visualisation techniques to critically analyse experimental or observational data and interpret results within the context of existing scientific knowledge.
- Communicate scientific research: Effectively present scientific research findings in both written and oral forms, tailoring communication to both specialist and general audiences.
- Adhere to scientific ethical and regulatory standards: Understand and apply ethical principles and regulatory requirements relevant to Plant, Food and/or Soil Science, and professional standards essential for conducting responsible scientific research.
