This course aims to introduce students to common construction materials, including concrete, steel, timber, and masonry, and to environmental considerations within the built environment. It provides essential knowledge that underpins further learning in courses such as structures, construction management, and construction.

Course learning outcomes
- Understand the terminology, characteristics, and scientific and engineering properties of principal construction materials, along with other factors influencing their selection and performance
- Identify and report on the appropriate and best practice application and installation requirements of construction materials and components
- Demonstrate understanding of climate parameters and passive building designs for indoor environmental quality and energy efficiency
- Explain the integration of renewable energy, water-efficient features, and noise control measures in buildings
- Explore sustainable building innovations and communicate sustainability concepts to stakeholders
